How to Use Optus Voicemail for Mobile Phones
Setting up voicemail on your Optus mobile can sometimes be a confusing experience, but it is actually simpler than you think.
There's no denying the jargon that phone companies use can too often be off-putting, and this applies in regards to voicemail set up as well. So, for those Optus customers of you who may be a little lost, we have put together a step-by-step guide to setting up voicemail on your mobile phone.
How to Set Up Voicemail
First of all, to activate voicemail on your mobile, dial 1509. Select the activate voicemail option from the list given. From there, just follow the prompts. It will take between 15 minutes to 4 hours for voicemail to become activated.
Once this occurs, you can move onto setting up your actual voicemail. To do this, dial 321 from your mobile phone.
Voicemail will ask you to enter your mobile number into your keypad and end it by pressing “#”. You will then be taken through the voicemail tutorial process where you be able to record your personalised greeting and record your name.
At the end of the set up process of your voicemail, you'll be asked to enter your PIN. Your starting PIN will be the last 4 digits of your mobile phone number. So if your number was 0000 4321, then "4321" would be your PIN.
You're allowed to change your starting PIN to something else, and Optus encourages this. Your new PIN can be between 4 to 9 digits long, but you must avoid numbers being in sequential order (123) or repeating (222).
With that done, your VoiceMail is set up and ready to work.
How to access Voicemail Messages
If you receive a voicemail, you will receive a message informing you of this. Accessing your voicemail is very simple on your mobile phone, and only requires you to dial 321 and the messages will play.
If you want to access your voicemail from another mobile phone, you can dial 0411 000 321 and enter your mobile number when prompted, followed by "#". You will then have to input your PIN and follow that with "#", as well. You can then listen to your messages. For calling from a fixed line, the process is the same as using a different mobile phone, only the number you need to call is 133 321.
How to listen to New Voicemail Messages
New messages are automatically played. At the end of each new message, you will be provided with the following options:
- Press 7 to replay the message
- Press 3 to delete
- Press 5 to save
- Press 6 to return the call
- Press 9 to exit the system
- Press * to return to the main menu.
How to set Diversions for Voicemail via Mobile Handset
If you want to, you can personalise when your voicemail picks up calls, such as it will only answer if you don't answer, or it'll only answer when you're on another call, etc. To do this, all you need to do is dial in the diversion codes with the appropriate action codes (ie activate diversion or deactive diversion)
Here are the diversion codes that exist with Optus Voicemail:
- 004 - will answer if you're on another call, don't answer, if your phone is switched off, or if you're out of range
- 67 - will only answer if you're on another call
- 61 - will only answer if you don't answer or your phone rings out
- 62 - will only answer if your phone is switched off or your out of range
- 21 - will answer your phone without your phone even having to ring. Optus suggest using this for when you're overseas.
The XX represents the diversion code you would write in. So, for 67, you would dial it in this way to activate: **67*321#
To deactivate, you need to dial this into your phone: ##XX#
So, for 67, that would be this: ##67#
Once you’ve dialed in the numbers either hit Send or Call and you’re set.
We hope this information has been helpful in guiding you through the sometimes confusing process of setting up, accessing, and modifying your voicemail for your Optus mobile phone. If you have any experiences with Optus to share with us, please feel free to leave them in the comments below.
